As Alaska natives we pride ourselves on all the beauty Alaska has to offer, as we are in no short supply! However, it goes without saying that the wildlife in Sitka is like none other, and when it comes to whales and other sea animals, we do not disappoint! As for whales you will see up to 3 main species including the:

Humpback Whale
The Humpback Whale can grow up to 17 meters in length and is characterized by its dark color, large fins and large tail. If you do happen to seea Humpback Whale it’s not uncommon for them to be seen slapping the water as they hunt. When eating they’ll likely prey on plankton, tiny krill and other small schooling fish. You’ll usually see them gulp enormous mouthfuls of their prey
and seawater.
Orca Whale
Also known as “the killer whale” orca’s are the most common whales around because they are found in every ocean! Characterized by their black and white color, these whales can weigh as much as 8,000lbs and can live up to 30-45 years! You’ll likely see the orca feasting on fish, seals and sea lions, dolphins, sharks and rays, large whales, squids, seabirds and more.


Grey Whales
Like the name describes this whale, is gray in color and has a smaller head than other whale species. It’s not uncommon to see their heads covered with barnacles and white whale lice. Both of which will appear like white bumps all over their head. Gray Whales are bottom feeders and they typically swoop up lots of sand and eat smaller sea animals like crabs, shrimp and plankton.
